                                                                                   August 2008

Members,
This month is a fifth Sunday month. On August 31st we will do our fifth Sunday Trail-Walk. Cartridge or muzzle loader, remember shooting a muzzle loader you get two extra shots. Twenty-five rounds for cartridge and twenty-seven for muzzle stuffers. It takes a lot of work to set up the Trail-Walk and keep it repaired and painted. We mix up the gongs and shooting stations to keep it fun for either cartridge or muzzle loader. Come up and shoot with us ‘cause this is a great match, IT’S FUN!!

September 14th Match is one of the great matches of the year. The Tom Trevor .45-70 Trap Door Springfield Match at 100 and 200 yards. Rifle & Carbine 15 rounds each with 5 rounds at a long range gong. Those 15 rounds will be 5-standing, 5-sitting, and 5-off hand for both rifle and carbine, the long range gong is your choice of rifle of carbine. If you don’t have a rifle or carbine, come up anyway, you can share mine. This is the one match that you don’t want to miss. September 14th starting at 9 am.

The results of this month silhouette match: (I need to use a lot of words this month so I’ll give the scores of all silhouette shooters and pad anything I can.)

     CARTRIDGE CLASS:

Lee Bowman 16 hits,

Sam Baseman 10 hits,

Skip Stokes 10 hits,

Rick Welle 9 hits,

John Clevenger 7 hits,

Tom Trevor 7 hits,

Tom Andress 6 hits,

Eli Covin 6 hits,

and Joe Gonzales with the only Muzzle Loader did not shoot his class.

It was a really good day, the light was bright, a cool breeze, and the temperature never got above 80 degrees. Sam Baseman was the only one that hit five animals in a row, the chickens. He gets those about every silhouette match but I always report it ‘cause he loves the press. Good day for the match even with the low scores. Why is that? Why are there day when everyone shoots well and days when everyone shoots poorly?  It was a good day with good friends and it happens again in October.

Have you ever wondered why the weeds on the range are the same size every Sunday?  Simple, every Wednesday Tom and I chop the weeds while Sam mines the berms. Then the tiny ones we miss grow and look the same as the last Sunday. Hopefully, soon we will chop enough that there will be no replacing themselves and Sam will have all the lead from the berms. It has to be done guys, if not; the weeds and sage will take over. You all are welcome to grab a hoe and chop weeds any Sunday or Wednesday before we start shooting. We have four hoes so you have no excuse. Help us to help you enjoy the nicest range in the canyon.

The Bakersfield Muzzle Loaders news letter is posted on our bulletin board. It has the dates of several matches that you might be interested. It is a long drive up the hill but sometime it’s worth it. Let me know if you decide to go, I might also be interested.

Does anyone out there have the top two bans for an 1864 musket? I need them if they are spares, let me know what you want for them or if I have something you need we can make a trade. I’ll be at the range, talk to me.
